Getting Started

What is AlongSide.Guide?β–Ό
AlongSide.Guide is a marketplace connecting seekers (people who want to learn by doing) with guides (experts who work alongside them, not just for them). Instead of hiring someone to do a job, you book them to do it with you.
How is this different from hiring a contractor or taking a class?β–Ό
A contractor does the work for you. A class teaches you in a classroom. AlongSide puts you next to an expert while you actually do the work β€” in your garage, on the water, in the field. You leave with real skills, not just a finished product.
Who are the providers?β–Ό
Providers are real people with deep, hands-on experience β€” electricians, fishing guides, reef tank experts, beekeepers, CNC machinists, chefs, and more. Credentials are a plus but not required β€” we care about proven real-world knowledge.
Is AlongSide.Guide free to join?β–Ό
Free for everyone to start. Seekers never pay to join, browse, post a gig, or message. Providers can list services and accept bookings for free too β€” the Free plan charges a 9% provider fee only when you get paid. Paid plans (Standard $29/mo at 4.5%, Premium $99/mo at 0%) lower that fee and boost your placement, but are never required. Seekers pay a flat 9% service fee.
How does AlongSide match me?β–Ό
When a seeker posts a gig, we instantly suggest qualified providers β€” matched on category, location, and rating. Providers see suggested gigs that fit their services. Quality is the gate: we only ever suggest genuine matches. Standard and Premium plans earn priority and top placement within that qualified set, but a paid provider is never surfaced ahead of a better-qualified one.

For Seekers

How do I find a provider?β–Ό
Browse AroundTown to see what's active near you, or go to Find an Expert and search by skill, category, or name. You can filter by location, format (in person or remote), rating, and more.
What's the difference between 'Gigs', 'Providers', and 'Experiential'?β–Ό
Gigs are open seeker posts β€” seekers posting what they need help with. Providers are guides offering services (In Person, Remote, or Both). Experiential are immersive guided adventures β€” think guided fishing, motorcycle rides, outdoor experiences, or hands-on lifestyle sessions.
How do I post a project?β–Ό
Click 'Post a project' from AroundTown or the nav. Describe what you want to learn or accomplish, set a budget and location, and guides will apply. You can also message a specific guide directly from their profile.
What if I don't find what I'm looking for?β–Ό
Post a gig β€” describe exactly what you need. Guides who match will apply. You're not limited to what's already listed.
Can I message a provider before booking?β–Ό
Yes. Every guide profile has a contact button. Direct messaging is equally valid to posting a gig β€” you're never forced into one path.

For Guides / Providers

How do I become a provider?β–Ό
Click 'Offer a service' and fill out your profile. Describe what you offer, your format (in person, remote, or both), your rate, and your availability. Your listing goes through a quick admin review before going live.
Do I need a certification or license?β–Ό
Not necessarily. Credentials are a tier/enhancement, not a requirement. What matters is proven real-world expertise. You can add credentials to your profile and they'll be displayed as a trust signal.
How does pricing work?β–Ό
You set your own rate β€” hourly, flat, daily, or custom. On the Free plan AlongSide takes a 9% platform fee per completed booking; Standard ($29/mo) drops it to 4.5% and Premium ($99/mo) to 0%. Seekers pay a flat 9% service fee on top. You receive the remainder within 48 hours of session completion via Stripe.
What is the AlongSide Certified badge?β–Ό
The AlongSide Certified badge is earned after completing verified sessions with top ratings. It's a trust signal that tells seekers you've been vetted through real outcomes, not just a paper credential.
Can I offer both in-person and remote sessions?β–Ό
Yes. When creating a service listing, select 'Both' as your session type. You can set separate rates for in-person and remote if you'd like.
What's the 'Join Me' vs 'Come With Me' model?β–Ό
'Join Me' means you open a seat on something you're already doing β€” your next fishing trip, your shop session, your beehive inspection. 'Come With Me' means the seeker hires you to accompany them to their location or project.

Profile & Images

What size should my service cover image be?β–Ό
800 Γ— 500 pixels, 16:10 aspect ratio, JPEG or PNG, 85% quality or better. Landscape orientation is required β€” portrait images will be cropped and may look wrong in the card layout. This size renders sharply on all screen sizes including mobile retina displays.
What size should my profile avatar be?β–Ό
Minimum 200 Γ— 200 pixels, square (1:1 aspect ratio). Your avatar is displayed as a circle throughout the platform β€” at 32px in cards and nav, up to 80px on your profile page. Anything under 200px will look pixelated on retina screens. Square crops work best.
What image formats are accepted?β–Ό
JPEG and PNG are recommended. JPEG for photos (smaller file size), PNG for graphics with transparency. Keep file sizes under 5MB. WebP is also accepted if you can generate it.
Can I add multiple images to my service listing?β–Ό
Yes β€” you can upload a cover image and a gallery of additional photos. The cover image is what appears in AroundTown cards. Gallery images show on your full service detail page.
My cover image looks cropped wrong β€” how do I fix it?β–Ό
The card renders your cover at a fixed 160px tall, full card width. The image is cropped from center. To control exactly what shows, crop your image to 16:10 (e.g. 1600Γ—1000) before uploading, and put your subject in the center third.

Bookings & Payments

How does payment work?β–Ό
Payment is collected at booking via Stripe. Funds are held in escrow and released to the provider 48 hours after the session completes. AlongSide charges 9% from each side β€” a 9% seeker service fee and a 9% provider fee (less on paid plans). You never pay the provider directly.
What if I need to cancel?β–Ό
Cancellation policies are set per guide. Contact your provider as early as possible. Refund eligibility depends on timing and the provider's policy. Disputes can be raised through the platform.
Is my payment information secure?β–Ό
Yes. All payments are processed by Stripe, which is PCI DSS Level 1 certified. AlongSide never stores your card details.
Can I barter skills instead of paying cash?β–Ό
Barter is a planned feature β€” seekers will be able to offer their skills or time as full or partial payment. Providers can accept, counter, or decline. Barter sessions are tracked, reviewed, and certified just like paid sessions. A flat facilitation fee applies. This feature will be available to Standard and Premium subscribers.

Trust & Safety

How are guides vetted?β–Ό
All guide applications go through an admin review before their listing goes live. ID verification is available as an additional trust tier. Ratings and reviews after every session build a public track record.
What is ID Verified?β–Ό
Guides with the 'ID Verified' badge have had their identity confirmed through our verification process. It's an additional trust signal β€” especially useful for in-person sessions.
What if something goes wrong during a session?β–Ό
Contact support immediately. Both seekers and guides are rated after every session β€” guides on knowledge sharing, communication, safety, and respect for your project; seekers on preparedness, communication, and respect for the provider's time. Disputes are handled by the AlongSide team.
Are sessions insured?β–Ό
AlongSide does not provide session insurance. For in-person sessions involving physical activity, we recommend guides carry appropriate liability coverage. This is especially important for trades work, outdoor experiences, and riding sessions.
